Some days ago Avast gave us some shocking news, they called on the security of android factory reset. They went on by saying the android phone data could be recovered even when you had set it to factory reset. They had proof and insisted on illustrating it. The company bought about 20 android phones online (eBay). Each phone had been wiped out all data through reset feature. This meant that the data should not or could not be recovered but that was not the case.
To recover the data they used a forensic software, FTK imager. It should be noted that this is not a rare software. It is one you and I can easily access, making it even scarier. They were able to recover 40,000 photos, old google search queries, emails and texts. Some of these data were not meant to been seen by anyone else except the owner because some were nude photos and selfies.
If you think that was shocking, with the existing retrieved data they were able to trace the original owners of four phones. The 4 people were surprised and insisted that they had deleted all their data out of the phone. They also said that for the data to actually be deleted, one had to overwrite that data with another data like benign data. This is tragic because almost 80,000 used android phones are for sale online daily. This means about 4 million people are vulnerable to humiliation due to unauthorized access to data.
They also insist that apple has had the best security because when data is wiped out one cannot retrieve the data and that the android phones should embrace this technology. Normally the apple factory reset tends to remove the encryption that usually protects the data while the android phone does not. This prevent unauthorized people to accessing any data. The company has not commented on this allegation which freaks out many android users. This results should be taken with skepticism, because this news favors Avast interest, because all they are saying is their security is much better than the androids. Remember this 2 companies are each in competition with the other in terms of business.in fact Avast has promised to wipe your device completely, it is called Anti-theft which is now available in google play. It help you in tracing your lost or stolen phone. Right timing, right?
